Close to the News…

Hmm… little news story.

Poughkeepsie High teacher stabbed multiple times by co-worker…

…The stabbing, he said, took place in a hallway of the school at approximately 10:03 a.m. Almost immediately, teachers, students and staff began to intervene. English teacher Ronette Ricketts managed to stab Glozier 16 times in total, he said.

…Wilson said Ricketts had come earlier in the morning to the district office looking for a personnel action sheet. "Somehow she was under the impression that she was being terminated," he said, adding he did not know why….

…Glozier, 54, a Rhinebeck resident, also an English teacher at the school, is listed in stable condition and recovering at Saint Francis Hospital. No students were involved or harmed in the incident, said Wilson…

Ok, so why am I conveying this story to you my semi-interested readers?…

Well, I just found it interesting that I… who resides some 1,000 miles from today’s crime scene, was at both of these locations today for a couple of business meetings… St Francis Hospital first followed by Poughkeepsie City Schools (particularly, the Admin Building).   Small world…Huh? Sometimes I really wish it was bigger.  Oddly enough, both of my clients were a little late to my meetings…  Can’t imagine why?  (Actually, I knew exactly why, we were briefed on the situation in detail by my client at Poughkeepsie City Schools… hard not to discuss something like this…)

Man, what is wrong with people?

So Long as it is on Someone Else’s Back!

I get disgusted every time I read a poll taken that says Americans want the wealthy taxed more and Businesses taxed more.

Well they didn’t ask this American’s opinion!

A CNN/ORC poll reportedly found the following:

Most Americans want a special congressional committee tasked with drafting a long-term solution to the nation's mounting federal deficits to include tax hikes for the wealthy and businesses and deep cuts in domestic spending, according to a new national survey.

… [it] also indicates that the public doesn't want the super committee to propose major changes to Social Security and Medicare or increase taxes on middle class and lower-income Americans.

My gawd… Did they take a poll of 3rd graders?

Little lesson for you here folks, we need to stop with this “Wealthy need to pay their share!” bovine scatology!  They contribute way more than their fair share!  Yes they have nice houses, yes they live a life of luxury, yes they may not suffer as much as the local McDonalds worker with 4 kids.  SO WHAT?!

Once he is content in his personal interest he has to do something with all that money!  Usually this excess is invested!!!  Look it up!

That wealthy bastard, more than likely owns a business or two that hires any number of employees who earn and contribute to the economy!  He buys capital items for his business with the funds his business earns!  Those capital items come from other companies who hire workers to manufacture them.  If the Wealthy isn’t a direct business owner/runner he more than likely owns shares in companies, these shares are offered to people like you and me to help fund the operations of said businesses!  Want to feel the power of ownership?  Buy a stock!

If we tax these so called wealthy more, that is mathematically less money that employer will have to hire someone.  Look, lets say we tax multi-millionaires another $500,000.00 per year… would that make you feel better that they didn’t have it and the government did?

Why? … Because the government will be so much more efficient with those funds?

Think about it.  That’s 10 people that employer cannot hire!  That’s 10 more people in the unemployment line, that’s 10 more people taking from the government for literally doing NOTHING!  Except maybe for looking for a job that is not out there because we’ve taxed the wealthy more!

Seriously get off your stupidity horse!

Second part… Let’s tax business more!  Face-Palm-Smack!

There is NO SUCH THING AS BUSINESS!!!  It is PEOPLE!  By taxing business more, we are taxing people more!  Whether they be the consumer of or the employee of that business!  Again for every $30,000 in taxes levied on a “BUSINESS” that is one less employee to be hired!  One less piece of equipment purchased.  That OR the business has to raise prices of goods or services to compensate for the tax increase.  (Ergo a tax on the consumer!)  The monies to pay these taxes don’t magically appear like a fart from a pixie!  They HAVE to come from hard working Americans!

Now as for… “the public doesn't want the super committee to propose major changes to Social Security and Medicare or increase taxes on middle class and lower-income Americans.”

It is precisely these entitlements that have the “Government” in the pickle its in.  But noooo we can’t touch these because they are so… What?…  effective????   Obviously you are giving the donkey one of your patented cranial enemas!

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid absolutely need to be re-visited!  Increase the tax on EVERYONE if this is supposed to be for everyone!!! Raise the age of receiving these benefits!!! We’re living longer damn it!  It should ALWAYS be a function of the average lifespan!  And should be revisited every 10 years!  Whoever is born in “X” year is eligible for benefits in “Y” year!

“Don’t tax the Middle class or lower-income Americans…” Why not?  Do they not benefit from government services more than anyone?  Shouldn’t they be called upon to contribute their “Fair Share” too?

I say TAX EVERYONE EQUALLY!  Either a 20% income tax on everyone period!  No deductions!  or… let’s really simplify the tax code and institute a 9% sales tax on all goods sold to an end user (wholesale is exempt).  You pay a tax on that which you can afford!  Also we capture that missing trillion dollars in uncollected revenue from under-the-table employees and illegal aliens.

Also… this method greatly reduces the cost and the size of the IRS!  We could save 100’s of Billions in that alone!

Some good videos from a guy named Milton Freidman follow… good food for thought, if you’re willing to eat it.

The Free Lunch Myth--

Soak the Rich --

There you go…

Now That’s What I Call a “Management Retreat”

The beauty of being involved with a small successful company is occasionally we have to get together, away from the daily grind to establish some plans for the future of the company… oh… and take a bit of a breather.

The two senior executives decided it would be good to get away for a bit, and were nice enough to bring the two Junior Executives along…

It was 5 days of roughing it, but hell… I’ve always been know to take one for the team!  Here’s some idea of how brutal our meetings were…

view from the lobby

Yep… 5 days at Cabo Del Sol – Fiesta Americana Resort!  With plenty of activities thrown in for good measure!  Like:

The Beach…

The Pool!

The Beach…

Cabo Del Sol Beach

Oh… then of course we had to play golf…

And then… back to the hotel… to watch some of the locals swim by…

All to be up in the morning for the next day’s efforts!

Four ATV at the Beach

ATV Pano

But again we had to watch how long we let these meetings run so we could make our dinner meetings too…

Oh, and whilst we were on our little cruise, wouldn’t you know it? The damn sun went down!

We just had to head back to the hotel and enjoy the evening…

We turned in early in preparation for a rough day… Fishing…

Oh sure looks peaceful and serene now…

But once around nature’s natural breakwater… uh… notsomuch!

However… Sandy and Ryan took it all in stride…

Me?  I was loving it!  I loved being at sea again!  Especially in 10 footers!  But hell… I had fish to catch!… so I did!

Not big… But fun!  We ended up catching 3 Sierra Mackerel like these.  I caught one and our “Fishing Virgin” of the bunch Ryan (that’s right NEVER caught a fish before… not even on a pond!) caught 2 more.  (If you look close below you can even see the fish breaking the water near the top of the left image as Ryan reels him in.)

DSC_0083  Ryans First Fish

We got shut out the rest of the day… but that’s ok too… time on the Pacific is ALL GOOD!

One of the most shocking things we saw was as we entered the harbor.  I looked over at another returning fishing boat and was surprised to see something other than a mermaid on the swim deck!

Yep that’s a full grown California Sea Lion!  Probably in the neighborhood of 4 or 5 Rosie O'Donnell’s… (ok maybe only 2…) but a good 1,500lbs at least!  Once he tired of their boat he made a bee line over to our transom!

Amazing!  But alas this was not the only native that knew a returning boat often bears great treats.  Upon our arrival at the slip we were greeted by a few pelicans (my personal favorite bird).

All in all it was a great trip… and I want to thank Sandy, Kevin, Ryan, for a fun and successful first Management Retreat!

The New Frontier! (Updated)

Griz Lives!image

In an announcement made today by Republic (Frontier and Midwest Airlines Parent Company) the single brand for the two recently acquired airlines will be “Frontier Airlines”.

Obviously this is welcomed news to local Denver fans of Frontier Airlines.  But from a business perspective I think this is a brilliant move on Republic’s part.  The Frontier name carries with it some great branding, and a fantastic well recognized ad campaign using the much loved animals on the tails to bring a persona to the carrier.

I travel quite a bit, and I try to take Frontier over the larger United Airlines when Frontier flies where I want to go (too bad they axed the Jacksonville flight).  I find the treatment I receive in the air is fantastic, the leg room (even in steerage) is ample for my long legs, and the in-flight entertainment options (Direct TV) is quite the welcomed distraction on some of my longer 4+ hour flights.

Now the work of incorporating two well respected airlines begins.  Branding is much more than painting talking animals on your tails.  It is attitude, consistency, care, and paying attention to Customer Service details!

A few things I suspect the execs will have to begin looking at in earnest:

  1. Addressing fleet distribution and routes
  2. Aircraft type consolidation
  3. In-flight Entertainment options on the Embraer fleet

I flew Midwest many years ago when they were first regaining some market share, and I was very impressed with their service and too their in-plane comfort.

I am glad to see the decision go in favor of the Frontier brand and image… but I will welcome the chocolate chip cookies!

Indeed a New Frontier will be flying over my backyard.

UPDATE:  New Frontier Commercial in honor of adding a Badger to the tails:

The Climate Bill… Who’s to Blame?

The House Climate Change Bill (AKA Cap and Trade) just passed the House in a 219-212 vote. So who’s to blame for this monstrosity?  Not the Democrats.

The Democrats did exactly what what is to be expected of them, lie cheat and steal to attain a ram it to the American Tax Payer bill.  I wonder, if this is such a great bill, why would so much back room dealing be necessary to get the necessary votes to pass it? (details here at Politico).

So if this proceeds to pass the Senate (keep your fingers crossed for the more sane legislative body to knock this down) the people we will have to blame are not the Democrats, they are simply leveraging the power they have been granted by the American People to advance their warped agenda.  The folks to blame in my mind are the 8 Republikans (in name only) who voted for this bill (which I’m sure not one of them read before voting on it!)  These 8 Republicans should be banned from receiving a single dime of reelection funds from the National Organization, and in these districts I highly recommend a competent, thoughtful, conservative run against these traitors.

Man Up Steele!

The 8 Republicans that voted for the bill:

  • Bono Mack (California 45th District)
  • Castle (Delaware)
  • Kirk (Illinois 10th District)
  • Lance (New Jersey 7th District)
  • LoBiondo (New Jersey 2nd District)
  • McHugh (New York 23rd District)
  • Reichert (Washington 8th District)
  • Smith (New Jersey 4th District)

Remember that vote count folks… could it have been… maybe 211-220?

Probably not, I’m sure many of those 44 “save my ass” Democrats that voted against this bill (Some because it wasn’t Communist and Economically destructive enough!… paging Mr. Kucinich!) would have succumbed to Queen Nancy’s pressure to tow the party line.

I’m all for less pollution and less dependency on foreign sources of energy, but rail roading something like this bill through is not the way.

Nancy’s words encouraging passage of this bill?  “Remember these 4 words, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!  Let’s vote!”

Providing High Quality Jobs

I want to know… who and with what type of skills are in un-employment line? And if all of these “Shovel Ready” new jobs will really employ those who are currently seeking work, or are those currently seeking work looking to pick up a shovel?

Tell ya what, I know plenty of SUPER BRIGHT people, if President Obama would like to stimulate the economy, provide my small business venture, um say 1/39,000th of the bailout GM is seeking, and I can employ some 30 people to create a quality company that would in very short order employ 300 people.

Gimme 3 years tax free to accomplish that goal, then if I succeed in employing 300 people, without need to go back to the well, then provide another 3 years tax free.

Now, say you made that simple promise to 39,000 small businesses, in three years assuming only 50% succeeded you would CREATE!!!! 5,850,000 new jobs, and I’m talking quality jobs, not just “Shovel Ready”  This would reduce the unemployment rate to below 3.5%.

I don’t even know what these companies would come up with, but incentive will prove wonders.  Want Green energy? I know a few engineers… want improved battery efficiency? I know a few engineers… want more fuel efficient engines?  I know a few engineers… want more solar, wind, Bio-fuel?  I know a few engineers… want more efficient post military operations, I know few experts in logistics… want better software for the government? I know a few software architects.

Want a better energy Bar?  Well hell, I already know where you can get that!

Now, not only is JungleGrub Certified USDA Organic, but it is Gluten Free too!  Not bad for a great 100 calorie snack.

Here’s to the power of the small, independent businessman.  Truly the Heart of America!

Hey Joe! I love you!… You got $39 Billion?

I was 13, when my eyes were opened a bit to exactly what destitution really was… but then I was in “Culture Shock” mode already.

We had just moved to Yokosuka Japan from Coronado California… (two poles of a cultural magnet if you ask me) where Dad was to assume command of the USS Midway (CV-41).  Only problem was the Midway, as was more the normal, wasn’t currently in Japan.  Nope, she was down in the Philippines at Cubi Point (Subic Bay) on exercises.  This was back in the day when the United States actually had military facilities in the Philippines.

So, not wanting to miss this momentous occasion, the whole family winged our way south to the land of Jungles, Monkeys, White Sand Beaches, and Olongapo… home of “Antiques while you wait,” the Po River (AKA Sh!t River… AKA Open Sewer!) and the “Hey Joe Kids.”

Ya see, connecting the US Naval facilities of Subic Bay (and NAS Cubi Point) to the local township of Olongapo was a bridge across the Olongapo River, known by far less proper terms as aforementioned.  On this river were a number of kids (8-12 years old on average) in canoes yelling at the sailors headed into town on liberty, asking for donations to their charitable cause!  “Hey Joe!  Got a Peso?”

The obliging sailor would then pull out a few coins of the realm, and toss to the kids in the canoes.  Or so went the theory.  Many o sailor, lacking a comprehensive understanding of the situation, and not fully understanding why prior to arriving in this humid jungle of Tijuana East, was required to receive both cholera and typhoid inoculations… would toss the coin not to the waiting hands of the kid in the boat, but rather, into the disease and germ infested Po river!  (Some sailors did indeed know better and did it anyway… vermin!) The kids, certainly not recognizing the hazards of their actions, dove in after the maliciously tossed coin!  This explained the average life expectancy of a “Hey Joe kid” being somewhere south of 18 years!

Later the US Navy made it a Court Marshal offence to toss a coin at the kids in the river.  The navy recognized the insanity, the malice of one taking glee in killing the innocent.

I was in shock watching this… Being the quite impressionable 13 year old I was, I could not quite grasp the magnitude of what I was seeing (and smelling).

We crossed the bridge… Dad wanted to show young John more of what the rest of the world was like.  It was an eye opener to say the least.  They came from everywhere, kids no older than I, mobbing us asking for money.  They knew no other way to survive, and holding out their hand had continually proven profitable.  These kids were addicted, to their own demise.  For as distasteful as this was… Uncle Sam was indeed the economic life blood of Olongapo!  Without the Navy, there was no economy… as the people would learn the hard way when a few short years later the US Military succumbed to the pressures of the Filipino government who viewed the US with distain… and left.

The people of Olongapo who knew only how to suck on the economic teat of the US Military were left to starve now that their sow had died.

I see the same thing happening in our economy today.  Once proud auto manufacturers standing in a river of shit with their hands out asking to be thrown coins of the realm for their survival, not knowing that in this act itself have all but assured their ultimate demise… only prolonging the agony.

Banking, Retail, Entertainment, Durable Goods Manufacturers, Resorts, Aircraft Manufacturers, Green Energy Producers… all blinded by the immediate allure of money being tossed with reckless abandon by a gleeful yet naive government, thinking they are doing the “Hey Joe Kids” a favor.

Mr. Obama, Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Reid… I don’t want your hand outs, you are killing our drive to excel, to strive, to become more efficient, to think for ourselves, to achieve meaningful goals.  You’re conditioning us to chase trinkets thrown into a river, to satisfy your malicious heart, satisfying your narcissistic impression that power comes from you… not from we the people.

As long as the teat of the American Sow is laid forth, the weak will indulge, sadly to their own demise when the milk runs dry.

Please, stop this madness, we are Americans, with the will, the intellect and the drive to succeed no matter the odds.  Do not take away our motivation by falsely providing us mirages of comfort, temporal as they are.  Tough love is what is needed.  We can be better, we just have to remember that in order to succeed we HAVE to be better, mediocrity should not be rewarded.

What is claimed as “Stimulus” is nothing of the sort.  The only thing the recent bill signed has done is to empower government more and de-motivate the majority of us, to a condition where we no longer feel we are earning for ourselves but rather earning for the STATE to take care of us.

Now we learn this is only the tip of the iceberg.  Mr. Obama is now proposing the next great rescue in $75 Billion of a Mortgage plan, and another $39 Billion to save a failing car manufacture that should have re-evaluated 20 years ago!

Of a scarier nature is… President Obama has not even submitted a budget, one wonders what that will look like.   And cost us, not to mention our children…!  To many the milk you offer looks sweet… sad that it soon be vinegar.

Really... Can't Make this Stuff Up!!!

Now most of you know that I'm a card carry'n member of PETA (WBBQS)!

That's People Eat'n Tasty Animals (with BBQ Sauce!)

image But I don't even know how someone can think this a remotely good idea... Here's the letter sent today from the EVP of PETA to her fellow "Off the Reservationists" Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, the creators of "Ben & Jerry's" Ice Cream!  Maybe she thought she had a willing ear???

September 23, 2008

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

Tracy Reiman

Executive Vice President

The response from Ben & Jerry's was quick... THANK GOD!

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

But... out of curiosity... what would you call that flavor?  Just Askin...

Cartoonist Could Use Your Help

I have long been a fan of political cartoons, I love the ability of an artist to convey a poignant message in a minimal amount of space.  I've enjoyed both Conservative and Liberal cartoons if the imagery and message is delivered well.

I've long been a fan of the creative musings of Berke Breathed, Garry Trudeau, Cox & Forkum (John & Allen) and many more...  One of my recent favorites, I stumbled upon a couple of years ago in a blog post, is Chris Muir, the writer and artist for Day By Day.

Chris blends a edgy even sexy artistic style, with mainstream political issues we face daily.  He weaves together thoughts and philosophies of both Left and Right through the lives of 4 main characters and often illustrates the simple naivete of a position taken by today's political headliners, PAC's, and fringe groups by pitting one against the other in his characters' actions and words.

Chris obviously falls more on the Right side of the political spectrum, which I find refreshing (Duh...)  because as seems to be the case with everything artistic or media related, the majority of cartoonists come from a left leaning slant, understandable considering idealism and passion often drives great art.  Two traits the left has a PLETHORA of and two traits we conservatives often have to ask advice on how to.... um.... fake... learn!  Yeah... learn!

So I was a bit dismayed this morning when I read the following from Chris Muir:

Unfortunately, technology finally ended my main job ... , which left DBD my only income.

He is left to turn to his readership for donations in the form of a fundraiser to continue publishing Day By Day.  Which I actually respect a great deal.  It is never easy to ask for compensation... when was the last time you asked your boss for a raise?  But Chris has a bit more of a difficulty, we are his boss, all of us who enjoy his strip daily, intermittently... whenever.

Chris is following capitalism in the truest form... he is asking for donations to the cause.  Personally I think it is more an issue of we consumers, pony-ing up and paying for the quality of writing and creativity we all enjoy.  Idealistically Chris obviously produces Day By Day because it is what he enjoys...  Pragmatically however he cannot continue to focus on creating these daily gems and pay the bills without some compensation.  He is truly an independent publisher.  And much like a server at your favorite restaurant... his livelyhood weighs heavily on... for lack of a better analogy... "TIPS!" from his patrons.  So if you like the service/product you've been consuming and want to consume into the future, he requests that you show your support in the most pragmatic way... with your wallet.

Here's his deal... He is looking for donations to keep things going, in his words.

...according to 'The Long Tail' theory of Internet readers, there's usually a core 1% that come through for Internet publishers. All donations are critical, and I also ask again of that '1000'. Look what Leonidas did with the 300-except I don't have a 6-pack, I'm not a leader, and the thought of all of you in G-strings frankly worries me a bit.

But we share the same beliefs, I think.

The site's been redone, there's a forum coming up, there's an email subscription, searchable archives, new avatars, a new DBD banner that shows the strip in a popup (so you have more advertising space on your own blog),twitter, free Wowio DBD ebooks, and when you donate to DBD you receive pdfs of never released drawings of DBD's start back in 1998 (yes, 2 years before DBD went up), examples of just how different Jan, Damon, Sam, and Zed were before 2001.

Depending on which of the 4 Donation Levels you select, there is also a DBD Playing Card deck, Sam posters, plus Original DBD hand-written script sheets complete with hand-signed strips that derive from those scripts.

That was the carrot, now for the stick, and...I don't have a stick.

I'll still try & get DBD out.

I think you can tell from the strip that I'm something of a minimalist. I drive a Honda that was new when Arsenio was hot. My first vacation in 12 years, and I go to Iraq to research for the characters. This isn't for sympathy, but clarity. I love doing DBD. Every hard-earned dollar you send here is for one purpose-to make it possible for me to improve and continue DBD for you (and me!).

In a PC correct era, DBD's characters speak with you on issues you find important. PC still rules the MSM, whether newspapers, the networks, or well-funded 'pundits'. DBD connects with people directly, the only comic where the readers are the source and the feature. You might depend on DBD, but the reality is DBD depends on you.

Help keep our voice out there. In one day, all of you got DBD more than halfway through 2008. Again, whatever amount is donated, I'll give directly back in DBD strips.

And yes. This time I will leave the Fundraiser up for a month, not a day.

Chris Muir

If you too would like to contribute to Chris's work, I recommend you go here and throw a few bucks his way!  [Link]
